Momentum
Momentum is a short-term resource that rewards mobile, combo style play. Players can collect Momentum Stacks and spend them to add for damage to Weapon Attacks or use a Secondary (or even Empowered) effect of their Art, however this mechanic may not apply to every Art.
Momentum Stack Management
A character’s Maximum Momentum stack is equal to Half (Round Up) of their Current Proficiency Bonus. They can gain 1 Momentum stack per round (up to your maximum) when you do the following:
- Taking a Dashing Action.
- Casting a Spell or Art that spins you in a Circular Motion.
- Completing the sequence: Attack Action(1)>Bonus Action Art>Attack Action(2) on the same turn.
(Duration & Retention) A Momentum Stack lasts for 1 round (until the start of your next turn). Each time you take an Attack action, all existing Momentum stacks on you refresh for another round. You lose all Momentum Stacks immediately if you are Knocked Unconscious, become subject to a movement inhibiting Condition (Such as Incapacitated), and at the end of Combat.
(Spending Momentum) When you land a hit with a Melee Attack, you may spend a single Momentum Stack to add a bonus damage die to that attack. It’ll still be expended if the attack misses. The bonus die scales by character level:
| Character Level | 1-4 | 5-8 | 9-12 | 13-16 | 17-20 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bonus Damage Die | 1d4 | 1d6 | 1d8 | 1d10 | 1d12 |
| The bonus die uses the same damage type as the attack’s primary damage die. | |||||
| (Example:) A Shortsword (1d6 Slashing) that spends one Momentum Stack deals 1d6+1d4 Slashing damage on that hit (plus your normal modifiers). |
Bonus Momentum Stacks
Although the general maximum Momentum Stacks a Character generate is limited, there are certain Classes that can increase a Character’s maximum Momentum stacks. If you qualify, you gain additional stacks equal to half (Round Up) of your Dexterity Modifier.
(Classes that gain Bonus Momentum:) Bard, Monk, Ranger, Rouge, Fighter (Champion & Battle Master)
Characters in other Classes may still gain the Bonus Momentum benefit by taking Mobility Based Feats (Limit 2 feats; taking more than two grants no further Bonus).
